Argentina—“Shall We Talk about Economics?” was the question raised in three IAED/UPF-Argentina’s online meetings held in August 2023, presented by Dr. Jorge Tuero who holds a doctorate in economics as well as an MBA (*). This was held under the CEPA Project’s 2023 Series: “Spaces of participation, learning and commitment for social transformation.”
In the meetings on August 14 and 21, presentations and participation revolved around learning economic systems, definitions and concepts, their centrality in daily life and Argentinian particularities (for instance: why do we think in dollars?), with cyclical economic crises, inflation and poverty. The last meeting, on August 28, addressed the need for citizens to empower themselves, on the basis of “educating the sovereign” (the people), as addressed by educator and former Argentinian President Domingo Sarmiento. Thus, financial and labor-related topics in daily life and entrepreneurship are essential to bridge the interest-values gap and reach a more social, sustainable economy.
In the last meeting, Dr. Tuero, representative of IAED-Argentina, one of the UPF leadership areas, asked the participants to be conscious of our reality and overcome the tendency of not wanting to know the truth in order to make a change. From there, he claimed the mandate: “Reeducating the sovereign” to “regain our power” as citizens. He began by emphasizing the importance of education in relation to how money, savings and investment work, because “without knowledge, we have no judgment” and we depend on media data and reports which are not always true.
He enumerated different points: the important balance between income and expenses, “to strengthen the value of the family unit,” cooperation and “women empowerment” in economic areas. With an “economy in crisis,” it is important to educate ourselves, he claimed. In the end, he stated that “the future can be grim,” thus the importance of preparing beforehand, learning and empowering ourselves. This is because changes will require “from two to three generations” and effort. Participants then asked questions and made comments, sharing the need to react to such crises and issues where we, as citizens, are in part responsible, making it imperative to learn and apply values.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Tuero, an Ambassador for Peace, also has a degree in political science and is an economics analyst and expert in transcultural negotiation. Author of the book La Nueva Ruta de la Seda, where he shared his experience in government and private management with China. He is also director of the civil association “Acercando Naciones,” which promotes knowledge, communication, volunteering and productive development.
CEPA Project’s objectives are: “Learning knowledge, experiences and good practices for overcoming, cooperation and commitment for Common Good and Peace. Providing a participatory space of training and practice of active listening, empathy, mutual respect despite differences, with a fraternal service spirit. Providing resources and tools to face issues, including post-COVID effects and changes in such uncertain times, with sense and hope, in an intercultural, intergenerational and interreligious environment.”

“¿Hablamos de Economía?” plantea Ciclo de UPF Argentina
“¿Hablamos de Economía?” fue el interrogante planteado en tres encuentros online realizados durante el mes de agosto 2023, donde expuso el Dr. Jorge Tuero, Doctor en Economía y Master en Administración de Negocios, de IAED/UPF Argentina (*). En el marco del Ciclo 2023 del Proyecto CEPA (Centros Educativos de Paz – Argentina): “Espacios de participación, aprendizaje y compromiso para la transformación social”.
En los encuentros del 14 y 21 de agosto la exposición y participación del auditorio giró en torno al aprendizaje de los sistemas, definiciones y conceptos económicos, su centralidad en la vida cotidiana y las particularidades argentinas (Por ejemplo: ¿Por qué pensamos en dólares?), con cíclicas crisis económicas, inflación y pobreza. En la última reunión, el 28 de agosto, se abordó la necesidad de empoderarnos como ciudadanos, partiendo del “educar al soberano” (al pueblo), planteado por el educador y expresidente argentino Domingo Sarmiento. En este caso en temas financieros y laborales, en la vida doméstica, el emprendedurismo; para intentar zanjar la disyuntiva interés-valores hacia una economía más social y sustentable.
En el citado último encuentro el Dr. Tuero, referente del capítulo argentino de la Asociación Internacional para el Desarrollo Económico (IAED), una de las áreas de liderazgo de UPF, pidió sincerarse ante la realidad y trascender la tendencia de no querer reconocer la verdad y hacer un esfuerzo para el cambio. De allí que reformuló el mandato: “reeducar al soberano” para “recuperar el poder que tenemos” como ciudadanos. Comenzó por enfatizar la importancia de la educación, en cuanto al funcionamiento del dinero, el ahorro, las inversiones; porque “sin conocimiento no tenemos criterio” y quedamos sujetos a datos e informes de los medios que no siempre son reales.
Enumeró entonces ciertos puntos: el necesario equilibrio entre ingresos y gastos, “reforzar el valor de la unidad familiar”, la cooperación y el “empoderamiento de las mujeres” en el tema económico. En una “economía en crisis” resulta fundamental emprender, sentenció. Para finalizar diciendo que “el futuro puede ser muy negro”, de allí la importancia de prepararnos, de conocer y empoderarnos ante la realidad. Porque, los cambios demandarán de “dos a tres generaciones”, y esfuerzo, acotó. Para dar lugar luego a preguntas, aportes y comentarios del auditorio, donde también se evidenció la necesidad de reaccionar ante la crisis y problemas cíclicos donde, como ciudadanos, somos corresponsables, siendo imperativo aprender y aplicar los valores.
Cabe acotar que el Dr. Jorge Tuero, Referente de IAED Argentina y Embajador para la Paz, es también Lic. en Ciencias Políticas, analista económico y experto en negociación transcultural. Autor del libro “La nueva ruta de la seda”, donde volcó sus conocimientos y amplia experiencia en gestiones en el ámbito gubernamental y privado con China. Director de la Asociación Civil Acercando Naciones, que promueve conocimiento, comunicación, voluntariado y desarrollo productivo.
Los objetivos del Proyecto CEPA son: “Aprender de saberes, conocimientos, experiencias y buenas prácticas para la superación, la cooperación y el compromiso por el Bien Común y la Paz. Propiciar un espacio participativo de formación, capacitación y ejercicio de escucha activa, empatía, respeto mutuo en las diferencias, con espíritu de servicio fraterno. Brindar recursos y herramientas para afrontar las problemáticas, incluido los efectos post-covid y los cambios en este tiempo de incertidumbre, con sentido y esperanza, en un ambiente intercultural, intergeneracional e interreligioso”.
