Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – In commemoration of World Environment Day, UPF-Burkina Faso organized an event under the theme “Promoting Peace through Sanitation and Environmental Protection” on June 20, 2026. Although World Environment Day is officially observed on June 5, UPF-Burkina Faso chose June 20 to maximize local participation and public mobilization.
The event emphasized the direct link between environmental degradation, community tensions, insecurity and social conflict. It also highlighted the idea that cleaning communities, protecting natural resources, and planting trees are concrete ways to build peace in daily life. It mobilized more than 2,500 participants and reached thousands more through media coverage.
The program opened with the national anthem and the peace anthem, followed by interfaith prayers and welcoming remarks. UPF-Burkina Faso presented its mission and explained the importance of linking peacebuilding with the Sustainable Development Goals and environmental responsibility. The ceremony included the donation of 1,000 tree seedlings and 1,000 protective grids to the Commune of Ouagadougou, demonstrating UPF-Burkina Faso’s commitment to practical environmental action.
Several personalities took part in the event, including Colonel-Major Amado Dabré, president of the event; Prophet Emmanuel Sawadogo; Mr. Thomas Diarra, secretary general of UPF- Burkina Faso; Mr. Arouna Barra, deputy secretary general; representatives of local authorities; traditional and religious leaders; Defense and Security Forces; artists; ambassadors for peace; and many invited guests.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the recognition and investiture of new ambassadors for peace, including traditional chiefs, religious leaders, parliamentarians, and members of the Defense and Security Forces. Certificates, trophies and medals of honor were presented to deserving personalities. Cultural performances by Burkinabè artists brought a joyful and patriotic dimension to the gathering.
