Benin Youth Join “Play Soccer, Make Peace” Initiative

Godomey, Benin – A joint commemoration of World Football Day and Africa Day brought together more than 100 participants on May 24, 2026, in a lively and fraternal atmosphere marked by unity and celebration. The event was organized by UPF-Africa, UPF-Benin, and the Youth Department of FFWPU-Benin.
The program included a celebratory segment in support of the ten African nations that qualified for FIFA World Cup 2026; the official launch of the Play Soccer, Make Peace initiative; a Peace March from the Ambassadors for Peace venue to the football field; and a Peace Football Match held in Godomey. These activities highlighted football as a tool for peacebuilding, youth engagement and social cohesion.
The event brought together key leaders including Amb. Adama Doumbia, president of UPF-Africa; Dr. Paterne Zinsou, secretary general of UPF-Africa, and representatives from UPF- Benin, FFWPU-Benin, and IAYSP Benin. Their participation underscored strong institutional support for the initiative.
In his remarks, Amb. Doumbia encouraged the ongoing efforts and expressed satisfaction with the program’s impact at grassroots level. Dr. Zinsou emphasized that football serves as a universal language for peace, unity and transformation, stressing the vital role of youth in advancing Africa’s vision of cohesion and development.
The Play Soccer Make Peace project was officially launched during the event, aiming to turn football spaces into platforms for peace education, respect and solidarity. A raffle draw added a festive touch, rewarding participants with branded souvenirs.
A Peace March followed, accompanied by music and a brass band, creating a vibrant procession that attracted community attention. Despite heavy rain during the matches, participants remained committed, reinforcing the symbolic message of resilience and peace.
The program concluded with two football matches, and the event received local media coverage, extending its visibility and reinforcing its message of unity beyond the venue.
