DRC Community Events Advance a Culture of Peace

Democratic Republic of the Congo – UPF-DRC celebrated two milestones on September 20–21, 2025: the 45th International Day of Peace and the 20th anniversary of UPF’s founding, with events in two cities.

Matadi CIty – In Matadi, Kongo Central Province, UPF-DRC organized a celebration in partnership with the Urban Youth Council and the NGO Femmes en Action. The celebration took place over two days, featuring both a formal conference and a vibrant cultural event that brought together leaders, youth, and artists to promote the theme “Peace Begins with Me.”

On Saturday, September 20, UPF-DRC held a conference at the Bar Association Hall in Matadi, where more than 80 participants gathered to reflect on the meaning of peace in today’s world.During the event, ten ambassadors for peace, including the mayor of Matadi, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to community harmony and public service. The conference emphasized individual responsibility in peacebuilding and the importance of embodying the principle that true peace starts within oneself.

The following day, celebrations continued at the Félix Tshisekedi roundabout, where artisans showcased creative works inspired by the theme of peace and harmony with nature. The event demonstrated how the arts can reflect and nurture a culture of peace.

With the support of the local television station Horeb TV, residents shared personal reflections on peace, creating a moment of collective inspiration and community spirit. The activity reinforced the message that peace is not only a global goal but a personal commitment that begins in every heart.

Goma CIty  – In Goma, North Kivu, a parallel conference led by Rev. Gilbert Boissa, UPF leader in the eastern provinces, focused on “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.” In his keynote address, Rev. Boissa provided deep insights into the spiritual and moral foundations of peace. He distinguished between political peace – often involving agreements that are not always upheld – and the culture of peace, which grows from the heart, inspired by true love for God, others, and society.

At the conclusion of the event, six distinguished individuals were appointed as ambassadors for peace, in recognition of their leadership in promoting reconciliation and harmony. Additionally, ten exemplary couples – Muslim, Christian, and secular – were awarded Certificates of Marital Merit for their faithful commitment to monogamous marriage spanning 40 to 50 years. Their example was celebrated as a living testament to love, unity, and the strength of family as the foundation of peace.

Participants expressed heartfelt appreciation for the conference and encouraged UPF to continue organizing such transformative programs that inspire moral renewal and social cohesion in the region.
