Marchers Choose “Argentina Builds Peace” as 2024 Theme

General Güemes, Argentina – Some 150 people gathered in the northern city of General Guemes on August 21, 2024, for a program to promote Peace Road 2024 and decide on a theme for this year’s event. The program took place at the February 13th Cultural Center; additional participants joined online.

Peace ambassadors and participants chose “Argentina Builds Peace” as this year’s theme. General Güemes had been chosen in July as the city to launch Argentina’s 10th annual Peace Road event.

Mayor Carlos Rosso, Director of Worship Patricia Amani, and local Peace Ambassador Valeria Singh, from the Sikh community, received the Peace Road trophy from UPF-Argentina President Miguel Werner and his wife Alba Luz Tangarife. Journalist Luba Opeka, UPF-Argentina’s public relations coordinator, and Jujuy entrepreneur Luciana Zambrano, handed over the Peace Road flag.

The trophy had been brought from the 2023 venue, Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza province, and will remain with the current hosts until a new venue is chosen for Peace Road 2025. The trophy consists of a circular structure made of recycled materials, with the global Peace Road symbol across a map showing the Southern Cone of South America, Antarctica and Argentina. The map is made of wood from native trees. The trophy is the work of artist José María Martín.

The program began with welcoming words by Ms Amani and Ms. Singh and a brief speech by Mayor Rosso. Mr. Juan Manuel Paredes, coordinator of institutional and international relations for Salta province, and Mr. Werner explained the initiative that began in Korea in 2013 and was officially launched in Argentina in 2020, with activities in all 23 provinces. Father Ángel Casimiro of the Santa Rosa Parish also addressed the group.

The event was enlivened by performances by the older adults folk dance group Macacha Güemes and the music group Los Inti.

The program concluded with the presentation of Peace Ambassador certificates to Jujuy teacher Ms. Nancy García Molina, founder of the AVES Foundation (environment, life, education and sustainability) and Dr. María Cristina Elías, cultural manager and plastic artist from Rosario de la Frontera and president of the Integrando Culturas Juana Manuela Gorriti Foundation.
