Washington, D.C., United States – On July 26, 2025, UPF-USA organized a Parents Day celebration at The Washington Times building in Washington, D.C. The Beech Room was filled with 120 guests, including 22 outstanding couples and their family members and friends from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
The 22 couples were nominated by 12 interfaith organizations that co-sponsored the gathering. Each sponsoring organization selected two or three outstanding families who are exemplary in raising their children and serving their communities.
Mrs. Tomiko Duggan, senior vice president of UPF-USA, warmly welcomed and introduced the distinguished guests. She presented the history and background of National Parents Day, which was proposed by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon in an address at the U.S. Capitol on July 28, 1993, adopted by Congress, and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1994.
Dr. Reiko Jenkins, the wife of Dr. Michael Jenkins, president of UPF-North America, and Mr. Larry Moffitt, secretary general of UPF-USA, then presented the 2025 Excellence in Parenting Awards.
Representing the co-sponsoring organizations, Dr. Surinder Gill of the Sikh community explained the significance of parents in shaping values in the Sikh tradition. He highlighted the teaching of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first prophet of the Sikh faith.
Pastor Belina Wimbish-Haile, an ambassador for peace, offered a spirited rendition of the song “Hero” and received standing applause. The members of the 12 co-sponsoring organizations continued their fellowship while sharing a specially prepared buffet luncheon.
