Auckland, New Zealand – Families and supporters gathered at Western Springs Garden Community Hall in Auckland for a UN International Day of Families Commemorative Event on May 16, 2026. The program brought together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the importance of family in Aotearoa New Zealand and to renew commitment to strengthening family life in our communities.

More than 50 people attended on a bright autumn afternoon, creating a warm and family-centered atmosphere. Mr. Geoffrey Fyers, secretary general of UPF-New Zealand, helped set the welcoming tone, and Mr. Raniera Pene, youth pastor of the Ratana Church, offered an opening prayer and blessing for the event.

A highlight of the afternoon was the keynote address, “The Family Is Our Kiwi Savior,” delivered by Mr. Adel Jamati, director of education for UPF-New Zealand. His message emphasized the vital role of families in building a strong and caring nation. Another key moment was the official launch of the National Family Day Petition by Mr. Kenji Watanabe, chairman of UPF-New Zealand, inviting attendees to support a shared public voice for the importance of family in nation-building.

The Voices of Family session added depth and heart to the program. Mr. Daymon Nin shared a parental perspective, Mr. Ray Calver offered a youth viewpoint, and Ms. Anne Degia-Pala spoke on behalf of grandparents and multigenerational families. Their reflections were complemented by vibrant cultural performances, including an Indian dance, a presentation by the West Auckland Chinese Association Group, and a Tongan dance by youth community members. Together, these contributions made the event informative, joyful and memorable, reminding everyone that strengthening families also strengthens the wider community.
