Liberia Day of Peace Focuses on Women as Peacebuilders
Monrovia, Liberia – A two-part program marked the International Day of Peace in Liberia on September 26, 2026, under the theme "Peace Starts With Me.” The event was organized by the New Liberian Women Organization (NETWOGE) in collaboration with UPF-Liberia, and focused on the important role of women in peacebuilding.
The program began with a peace parade. All groups assembled at the University of Liberia Fendall Campus Palava Hut at 9:00 am. The march took off at 10:00 am, with songs of peace and unity, towards Walako Junction Hill and back to the campus of the New Liberian Women Organization at Cooper Farm.
The indoor program commenced at 12:00 pm with Amb. Felecial J.W. Dorbor serving as MC. It began with an opening prayer by Bishop James Gaga Smith. Welcoming remarks were given by Rev. Pamela S.M. Mwanga.
Dr. Agnes Fortune Cannon, a prominent philanthropist and activist for women’s rights, gave a brief history of NETWOGE, followed by an overview of UPF by Rev. Gerald B. Coleman.
Dr. Cannon then gave the keynote address, saying, “Peace is not the absence of war. Peace is the presence of empowered women! When a woman is trained, a community is transformed. When a woman is empowered, a nation is built. This is why our theme is women empowerment, peacebuilding and leadership.”
Mr. Daogogoe H. Fahnbulleh, executive director of the Foundation for All Ages Liberia, also addressed the gathering, along with other guest speakers including a traditional chief, legislators, and civil society representatives.
The climax of the event came when three distinguished personalities were recognized as Ambassadors for Peace – Dr. Agnes Fortune Cannon, Mr. Daogogoe H. Fahnbulleh and Bishop James Gaga Smith – in recognition of their outstanding contributions to peacebuilding, women’s empowerment, and community development in Liberia. Mr. George N. Kingsley, president of UPF-Liberia Chapter, presented the certificates alongside Rev. Pamela S.M. Mwanga.
The vote of thanks was offered by Mr. McCarthy G. Teayah, secretary general of UPF-Liberia, and a closing prayer offered by Rev. Mwanga.
