On behalf of the founders of the Universal Peace Federation, Dr. Hak Ja Han and her late husband, Dr. Sun Myung Moon, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Ambassador Joy Uche Angela Ogwu, former foreign minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2006–2007) and former ambassador and permanent representative of Nigeria to the United Nations (2008–2017). Ambassador Ugwu passed away on October, 13, 2025. UPF wishes her family, friends, and all who knew her peace and comfort during this time of loss.
Ambassador U. Joy Ogwu was one of the most respected and distinguished UPF ambassadors for peace, deeply resonating with and supporting the mission and ideals of UPF. She received the Ambassador for Peace Award during one of several UPF events held at the Office of the Nigerian Mission to the United Nations.
Throughout her illustrious diplomatic career, Ambassador Ogwu exemplified excellence, integrity, and vision. During her tenure at the United Nations, she twice presided over the UN Security Council, demonstrating exceptional leadership and deep insight into the founding spirit and purpose of the United Nations. Her contributions left a lasting mark within the UN community in New York and beyond.
In 2013, Ambassador Ogwu was honored with the Spirit of the UN Award by the NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values, and Global Concerns, recognizing her outstanding commitment to the principles and values that uphold peace, dignity, and global cooperation.
We remain forever grateful for Ambassador Ogwu’s remarkable service and her unwavering dedication to universal values and the cause of peace. May she rest in the eternal embrace of our loving Heavenly Parent. Her light and example will continue to inspire generations of peacemakers.
With deepest sympathy, Dr. Tageldin I. Hamad, President, UPF-International October 15, 2025
