Lima, Peru – In an atmosphere of profound civic spirit, remembrance and international fraternity, UPF-Peru hosted a ceremony for the presentation of flags from Argentine veterans of the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War to Peruvian veterans of that conflict – a formal event of historical significance that strengthened the bonds of brotherhood between Peru and Argentina.

The event, held on October 10, 2026, in the UPF-Peru auditorium, also featured the presentation of two notable literary works, as well as well-deserved recognition of individuals from the political, military and academic spheres who are actively working to build a culture of peace.

The special flags resemble the flag of Argentina, but include an outline of the Falkland Islands. The presentation of these Argentine patriotic symbols – representing mutual respect and the living legacy of continental memory – took place in a solemn ceremony.

Argentine author Ms. Sol Gutiérrez, acting as an official representative of the Malvinas War veterans, presented the first flag, accompanied by an official letter of donation, to Dr. Raúl Huamán Coronado, a former Congressman of the Republic of Peru and coordinating representative for the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP).

She then presented a second flag to retired Major César Mendoza Egoavil, current president of Battalion Peru, which represents Peruvian veterans who served in the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) — part of the UN Peacekeeping Forces, or Blue Helmets, that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988. Incidentally, that prize was received by then UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar from Peru.

A keynote speech was given by retired Col. Victor Manuel Pimentel Roque, a researcher and author specializing in military history. Prominent academic and sociologist Dr. Durga Ramírez Miranda provided a response as guest panelist.

Their contributions underlined how the peoples of Argentina and Peru are bound by historical ties, from the struggle for independence led by General José de San Martín in Peru, to 1982, when Peru raised its voice and stood firmly by Argentina’s side during the Malvinas War. Its political, diplomatic, material, logistical and human backing represented a full expression of support and solidarity.

This academic and patriotic event was enriched by the presentation of two literary works that explore human resilience, respect, and social dignity from different perspectives, both by Ms. Sol Gutiérrez. "The Pain of a History I Did Not Live – Malvinas 1982" (Argentina), focuses on historical memory, honor and the due recognition of combatants. "Atria Perú – Gerontological Excellence" (Peru) captures the inspiring life story of Ms. Nelly Tuesta López in overcoming adversity and fostering social outreach for older adults.

Mr. Jaime Fernández Túpac, secretary general of UPF-Peru, presented certificates of recognition on behalf of president Dr. Trevor Jones, to the Malvinas War veterans, Ms. Sol Gutiérrez, Dr. Coronado, Major Egoavil, Col. Pimentel Roque, Dr. Ramírez Miranda, and Ms. Nelly Tuesta López, president of Atria Perú.

Through this event, UPF-Peru reaffirmed its commitment to building bridges of understanding and brotherhood among the nations of the world.
