Banfield, Argentina – Eight couples who have been married more than 40 years received awards at the 18th “Family and Common Good” program organized by UPF-Argentina on August 22, 2026.  The event was held at El Nuevo Amanecer Senior Center in Banfield, in the province of Buenos Aires. This recognition is given annually to couples married for 25 years or more, in celebration of the International Day of Families.

Introductory speeches were given by Mr. Miguel Werner, president of UPF-Argentina, who also acted as MC, and by the host Ms. Elvira “Chichi” Cabrera, president of Banfield’s El Nuevo Amanecer Senior Center. There were also a prayer and a blessing given by Deacon Jorge Ramos of Banfield’s Our Lady of Itatí Parish.

In the beginning, each couple entered with a special song performed by Mr. Marcelo Sorondo, singing coach and coordinator of the senior center’s choir. This created an emotional environment for the recognized couples, who were seated in front of the audience.

The eight couples then shared emotional life testimonies, cheerful anecdotes, experiences of resilience, and the values they have upheld through their decades of married life. The romantic moment came when, at the end of each recognition, the gentleman gave a rose to his partner and sealed the gesture with a kiss.

Certificates were awarded by Ms. Cabrera; Mr. Werner; Ms. Alba Luz Tangarife, member of UPF-Argentina’s governing board; and peace ambassadors Ms. Graciela Pampin, president of the Federation of Seniors Organizations; and Ms. Estela Bemberg, member of UPF-Argentina’s volunteer team.

After a cake cutting and a toast, Ms. Milu Morales and Mr. Marcelo Chávez performed several songs, and  cheerfully encouraged everyone to dance. The couples were invited to dance a classic waltz.

UPF-Argentina has given these recognitions since 2009, usually in proximity to the International Day of Families and the Global Day of Parents, in Buenos Aires City and various provinces. This is a way of appreciating and strengthening intergenerational bonds and recognizing the unconditional love of parents and the central role of families as the pillars of society.
