Mexico City, Mexico—On July 30, 2023, a Peace Road 2023 event, “One Heart Rolling for Peace,” was held in commemoration of the UN International Day of Friendship (IDF) in Mexico City. The IDF was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly. The Peace Road participants and observers celebrated and united with the idea and hope that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.
“One heart rolling for peace!” shouted many bystanders as they shared the hope for the end to violence and the hope for peace and friendship. The commemorative day was celebrated throughout the continent. UPF-Argentina sent a congratulatory message: “We salute and congratulate those who invest time and effort in fostering positive and constructive links between organizations, peoples and cultures…generating healthier and more friendly environments.”
The Peace Road global initiative seeks to connect every human being in all regions of the world, aiming to achieve greater interrelations and mutual prosperity. It was initiated in Korea in 2013 and has expanded with various activities to 120 countries around the world.
July 30, in addition to being the IDF, is also World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This important program aims to raise awareness of the disturbing developments and trends identified by UNODC and calls for an end to “modern slavery.” Many referred to a new American film, Sound of Freedom, based on the true story of a former U.S. government agent who rescued children from sex traffickers in Colombia.
Since establishing World Bicycle Day on April 12, 2018, the UN General Assembly has recognized the need to strengthen and coordinate efforts to maximize the potential of the bicycle and its contribution to the achievement of the objectives of peace and sustainable development, as well as the goals of the UN Agenda 2030.
