San Jose, Costa Rica – Representatives from UPF-Central America were invited to attend the 30th anniversary of the Forum for Presidents of National Assemblies (FOPREL), held at the National Assembly of Costa Rica in San Jose on March 14, 2024.
The meeting included the inauguration of FOPREL’s new president pro tempore, Dr. Rodrigo Arias, who is president of the National Assembly of Costa Rica. He is brother to former Costa Rican president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Oscar Arias.
President Rodrigo Chavez gave the welcoming address to the gathering, which included presidents and representatives of their national congress, parliament, or assembly, from throughout the region.
Dr. Michael Jenkins, international president of UPF, who is also international coordinator of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace, attended the event, along with Dr. Ricardo de Sena, president of UPF-Central America, and Mr. Roy Sanchez, director of UPF-Costa Rica.
During the event UPF honored Dr. Rodrigo Arias as an Ambassador for Peace.
FOPREL seeks to facilitate regional integration through parliamentary institutions, especially in the harmonization of laws. It supports the UN sustainable development goal of promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions.
