Lima, Peru – The office of Congressman Raúl Huamán Coronado joined UPF-Peru and the International Association of Academicians for Peace (IAAP) in sponsoring a forum to celebrate the U.N. International Mother Earth Day on May 2, 2024. The meeting took place in the José Faustino Sánchez Carrión auditorium of the Congress of the Republic, with the participation of more than 200 guests.
Minister of the Environment Dr. Juan Carlos Castro Vargas addressed the gathering as the guest of honor. He congratulated UPF on its work in Peru, and stressed the responsibility of ambassadors for peace in promoting peace through caring for the environment.
Other speakers included Dr. Christian Contreras Otiniano, secretary general of IAAP, who is a geographer, engineer and member of The Nature Conservancy; Mr. Arturo Alfaro Medina, president of the NGO Vida; and environmental activist Dr. María Isabel Romaní Alcarraz.
UPF-Peru presented special recognition awards to Congressman Huamán and to Dr. Castro Vargas, and appointed 47 new ambassadors for peace. In return, the congressman presented awards to Dr. Trevor Jones and Mr. Jaime José Fernández Túpac, president and secretary general of UPF-Peru.
The meeting concluded with a musical presentation by a choir from the Lawyers College of Lima, “Lawyers for Universal Peace.”
