Latvians Take “Peace Road” through Riga
Written by Janis Valters, vice president, UPF-Latvia
Saturday, July 2, 2016
Riga, Latvia—A group of 25, including an Ambassador for Peace, carried the Peace Road 2016 banner on a march through the center of Riga.
The goal of the participants in walking 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles) on July 2 was to express support for several projects that the participants believe can help bring peace to the world. These projects, promoted by the UPF founders, are: the establishment of a fifth United Nations office in the Korean Peninsula; the building of a tunnel between South Korea and Japan; and the construction of the Bering Strait Peace Bridge/Tunnel between Russia and the United States.
The day’s events began in the Riga Peace Embassy, where UPF-Latvia Vice President Janis Valters explained the meaning and goals of the Peace Road initiative, and UPF-Latvia President Dr. Makoto Ando gave his greetings.
After signing the Peace Road 2016 banner, the participants walked through the center of Riga to a destination in a park. The event concluded with the participants being given an opportunity to write their reflections.
One of the student guests wrote in his reflection: "This is a good message for the Latvian people."
