Empowerment of Women

UPF supports UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which calls for increasing involvement of women in preventing and resolving conflicts, peace negotiations, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction. Furthermore, the majority of the poor people of the world are women and children, and global poverty cannot be solved without the empowerment of women and the leadership of women. New York, USA - During the 58th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women at the UN headquarters in New York, UPF joined with diplomats and other NGOs in organizing a events on March 13 launching a campaign opposing human trafficking.

Kathmandu, Nepal - UPF– Nepal and the Women’s Federation for World Peace–Nepal jointly organized a program entitled, “Violence Against Women: Changing Our Attitudes” at the Peace Embassy on January 22. An international audience of over 150 attended.

Novosibirsk, Russia - An activity in support of the all-Russia observance of Mothers’ Day was held in Novosibirsk on November 25. In the Royal Park and Sun City shopping centers, activists handed out flowers and picture post cards to mothers.

Washington, DC, USA - A professor of women's studies at the University of Tunis in Tunisia, Mrs. Houda Zaibi Belhassen shared insights into the "Arab Spring" in her native Tunisia to a select audience at The Washington Times on January 25. She particularly noted the progressive Personal Status Code that offers special protection to women and children.
