Promoting Integration of Albanian Orphans in Society

Tirana, Albania - UPF Albania joined the National Institute for the Integration of Albanian Orphans in a number of events to draw national attention to the needs of orphans. The occasion was the “Award of Gratitude” to the Institute on May 19 by the president of Albania, Bamir Topi, for its work. Albania celebrates National Orphans Day each year on May 20.

Many Ambassadors for Peace participated in the events, which had the support of the First Lady of Albania, Mrs. Teuta Topi. Mr. Ilir Cumani, director of the Institute and an Ambassador for Peace, organized activities and pledged to work even harder to help the orphans.

The program started at 9.00 AM at the main square in the center of Tirana. From there everyone marched along the main avenue to the “Youth Park,” where two Red Cross tents were set up for those who were willing to donate blood for children in need.

Participants in the march included 35 Ambassadors for Peace. Among them were Hon. Gaqo Apostoli, Member of the Global Peace Council; Mrs. Lavdie Ruci, Chair of UPF-Albania; Mr. Bajram Ibraj, Chair of UPF-Albania's Family Committee; Hon. Dashamir Shehi, Member of Parliament; Mr. Manjola Nallbani and Mrs. Eneda Tarifa, noted singers; and Mr. Skender Sallaku, a nationally known artist.

Among the distinguished guests were the Chairman of National Muslim Community Mr. Selima Muca; World Leader of Bektashi Community Father Reshat Bardhi; Hon. Besnik Mustafaj; Members of Parliament; and more than 300 orphans. Seven Ambassadors for Peace donated blood to the Red Cross. The national media reported on this wonderful event throughout the day.

The day concluded with a special lunch for the orphans and distinguished guests at the Dajti Mountain, 1,000 meters above the sea level. The special lunch was offered by the owner of Dajti Express Cable Car. All enjoyed the wonderful lunch at the Balcony of Dajti Restaurant.

All children received gifts at the end of the lunch, and the First Lady and other officials assured them that more care and attention will be invested in them in the future. We hope that memories of the event will long remain in their hearts and give them hope for their future.
