New York, USA - UPF offers its congratulations to H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, permanent representative of the state of Qatar, upon his election as the president of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly. Al-Nasser was nominated by the Asian Group for the annual presidency, which rotates among the regions of the world.

"I pledge to you that I will undertake this important role in a spirit of constructive cooperation and mutual respect," Al-Nasser said in a speech after his election. He said he would focus on building consensus on major global challenges facing the world today, including armed conflict, the rights of peoples to self- determination, hunger, poverty, terrorism, and climate change.

H.E. Al-Nasser addressed the 2009 International Day of Families commemoration sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the UN and other Missions in cooperation with the Universal Peace Federation.

"Since 2004, the State of Qatar has promoted the importance of national capacity development in the area of family policy-making," he said. "For that purpose, Qatar is hosting the Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development, which was established in 2005 as one of the outcomes of the Doha International Conference on the Family."
