Women’s Role in Politics Discussed in Tatarstan

Kazan, Russia - “The Role of Women in Modern Politics” was the theme of a program held at the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies in Kazan, the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan. The event, which was held on March 6, 2014, two days before International Women’s Day, featured as guest of honor Anastasia Isayeva, the deputy chair of the Tatarstan State Council on Culture, Science, Education and National Issues.

The meeting was initiated by the Young Ambassadors for Peace together with the Student Scientific Society and the Young Guard organization. For the students it was a real surprise to hear messages from Helena Kolesnechenko, a Young Ambassador for Peace, and Alena Dolgovaya, the president of the Economic Club at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. The two speakers expressed their vision of the role of women in contemporary society and pointed out the main challenges in the fight for gender equality.

There were many who desired to talk with a woman such as Anastasia Isayeva, who was unafraid to build a career in such a difficult area as politics. In her talk she drew vivid and interesting examples from real life and gave a detailed response to each question. She enthusiastically talked about working with male colleagues and about the fragile balance between family and career.

Because the meeting was limited in time, some questions remained unanswered. However, Anastasia Isayeva expressed her desire to return to Kazan to give a master class on the art of public speaking.
