Kathmandu, Nepal—In celebration of the UN International Day of Families 2021, the Nepal chapter of UPF organized an online event on Zoom on May 15. The webinar, whose theme was “Families and New Technologies,” the theme of this year’s Day, was attended by 132 participants. 

In 1993, the UN General Assembly decided May 15 should be the day The International Day of Families is observed annually. The Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

The program began with welcome remarks from Mr. Santosh Kumar Paudel, director of UPF-South Asia.

The chairman’s remarks were given by Hon. Ek Nath Dhakal, chairman of UPF and the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) in the Asia Pacific and a former minister of the government of Nepal. He emphasized the importance of the family in this modern age and that we should use technology for the right purpose, connecting families and friends throughout the world.

The speakers were two couples. The first couple was Mr. Deepen Rana and Mrs. Surina Gurung, director and principal, respectively, of the Galaxy Public School. They spoke about the importance of family values and expressed their appreciation to UPF founders Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr.  Hak Ja Han Moon. 

The second couple was Mr. Surendra Shrestha, founder of the Nobel Academy, and Mrs. Laila Shrestha, who is an architect engineer and managing director of Art View Engineering Consultancy. They shared their experiences living with three generations of family.

The moderators were Mr. Binod Dangi, secretary general of UPF-Nepal, and his wife.
