Day of Families Observed in Suriname

Paramaribo, Suriname - UPF-Suriname held a conference for Ambassadors for Peace celebrating the International Day of Families on May 14. The evening program opened with prayer and the Suriname National Anthem.

Dr. Carla Bakboord, a representative of the Suriname government and human rights activist, provided an introduction to the causes and elimination of domestic violence. Her conclusion was that the lack of a proper balance of power between men and women and between the elderly and children are the causes of domestic violence.

Dr. Susan Ristie spoke about he peace principles of UPF as presenting a solution to domestic violence. She emphasized cultivating good character and the development of a good relationship between husband and wife and the between the family and community, grounded in a relationship with God and based on the teachings of UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon. The Chair of the Women's Federation for World Peace-Suriname, Mrs. Ingrid Wouden, presented Dr. Bakboord with a bouquet of flowers and thanked her for the clear exposition of domestic violence in Suriname. 

After answering questions, the Chairman of UPF-Suriname, Dr. Ramon de Freitas, made closing remarks. A cake was raffled and was won by a 75-year woman, who then presented it to a person who will be celebrating a 60th birthday in a few days.

At the close of the evening, people enjoyed beverages and snacks. It was a blessed evening.

The entire evening was recorded by national TV ATV. Further interactive programs and cooperation with other organizations are planned with the aim of a nationwide reach.
