Moldova-2019-02-07-Interfaith Organization Inaugurated in Moldova

Chisinau, Moldova—The Interreligious Association for Peace and Development was launched in Moldova during World Interfaith Harmony Week.

With financial support from UPF Europe, the Moldovan chapter of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU), an organization that is affiliated with UPF, organized a conference on February 7, 2019. The date was chosen to coincide with the United Nations-designated World Interfaith Harmony Week, which is celebrated around the world in the first week of February.

More than 70 persons participated in the conference, including representatives of the United Nations and the Moldovan government, professors, religious leaders, students and youth. The conference took place at the Faculty of Law at the State University of Moldova.

Speakers at the conference were the national coordinator of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; a member of the Council for Preventing and Eliminating Discrimination and Ensuring Equality; religious leaders including a Christian Orthodox priest, a Protestant Christian representative, an Old Christian Church representative, and the national leader of the Unification Church; also university professors and youth leaders.

At the end of the conference we launched the Moldovan chapter of IAPD. Father Maxim Melinti, a Christian Orthodox priest (representing the main religion in Moldova), read aloud the IAPD declaration and then signed it, after which every participant signed the declaration.

We also awarded prizes to the young people who earned the first three places in the “Peace Starts with Me” essay contest in connection with World Interfaith Harmony Week 2019. In total, 67 essays had been submitted.

Before the conference we also were invited to explain about the conference on national youth radio.

About 60 persons watched the conference online. Some of them wrote that they had wanted to participate in person, but could not come to Chisinau. This represents an important result and shows great interest in this topic.

In conclusion the conference and essay contest were successful, and it is important to continue promoting interfaith dialogue through IAPD activities in order to maintain sustainability.
