Interfaith Harmony Week Observed in Quito

Quito, Ecuador - An observance of World Interfaith Harmony Week took place with friendly religious leaders at the Peace Embassy in Quito on February 7. The participants were representatives of the Catholic Church, Episcopal Church, Evangelical Church, the Hebrew Community, Hinduism (the Vaisnava Culture Center and Brahma Kumaris), and the Ecuador Family Church.

Dr. Leonardo Montoya, a member of Interreligious Committee of UPF-Ecuador, gave the welcoming speech. After an explanation about the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week, Pastor Castulo Léiton, a member of the Interreligious Committee of UPF-Ecuador, read the UN Secretary-General's message for this year's Interfaith Harmony Week.

This was followed by candlelight prayers for interfaith harmony, sharing reflections about interfaith themes, and refreshments.

“UPF welcomes all types of religious people regardless of their faith or conviction. Because people sometimes give us scornful looks, we are sensitive about discrimination. But UPF is different. I have never received such a warm welcome until now.” - a representative of Hinduism

“We were working to reach religious people each month during 2012. Also, we have visited other cities to meet religious people. On this occasion, we felt that the unity of these leaders was the fruition of the year of 2012. We will continue holding monthly events and meetings of the Commission at the Peace Embassy or other locations. We are very grateful for the effort and dedication of every member of UPF.” - Dr. Montoya, a member of the Interfaith Committee
