Interfaith Harmony Week Commemorated in Tbilisi

Tbilisi, Georgia - A commemoration of World Interfaith Harmony Week took place at the office of “Georgia in Support for Refugees” in Tbilisi on February 4. The event drew attention to the resolution that the UN General Assembly adopted in 2010 affirming that mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace and proclaiming the first week of February every year as the World Interfaith Harmony Week between people of all religions, faiths, and beliefs.

The event brought together 20 representatives from different NGOs, Ambassadors for Peace, former political leaders, youth leaders, and students. The program included sharing words from religious teachings and praying for 2012 to be a year of reconciliation, mutual understanding, and true peace. Participants discussed UPF's interreligious program that took place at the Cheon Bok Gung interfaith sanctuary in Seoul on January 22, which brought together 200 participants from 72 nations to consider paths to peace.

Participants resolved to spread the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill based on love of God and love of one’s neighbor. People can recognize that this age of globalization needs enlightened people in each faith who can examine their sacred writings and traditions and identify the aspects that can benefit all humanity. They referred to the Divine indwelling in a way that encourages understanding, respect, and cooperation among people of all faiths for the well-being of their communities and peace in the world.
