RYS Education and Cultural Programs in the Philippines


Participants: 120 Nations Represented: 36

Aphalit, Cavite and Ilo-Ilo IslandPhilippines

Work Projects: From July 10th to August 15th, three separate work sites were set up with nearly 40 participants at each work site. The three locations were:

  1. Dasmariñas, Cavite: near Manila. RYS built a small bridge with assistance from staff and engineer students of Technical University of the Philippines. Participants from 16 nations were involved at this site.
  2. Aphalit: RYS dug 16 neighborhood wells at approximately 180-foot depth, which are being used for clean water drinking wells and sanitation facilities. Cooperation with the Aphalit Christian Community Center facilitated the work.
  3. Ilo-Ilo Island: RYS constructed a 3-classroom elementary school 6 X 30m) and an assembly hall (6X16m) at WVCST. Participants worked with students to plant 10,000 mahogany trees on Guimaras Island as part of a project to help provide funds for the local college (WVCST)

Summary: The participants spent four days in Manila taking part in education and cultural programs. During this time they visited both religious and cultural sites including a mosque, Taoist Center, Buddhist temple and Roman Catholic Cathedral. During the reflection period the participants had the opportunity to have cultural programs from different Philippine performers as well as their own inter cultural program. 

Cooperating Agencies and Personel: This RYS project was co-sponsored by the Aphalit Community Alliance, De LaSalle University, Technical University of the Philippine, the Professor's World Peace Academy (PWPA) -Philippines chapter. International technical and financial support came largely from the International Relief Friendship Foundation (IRFF). The International Religious Foundation (IRF) provided the support for the education and interreligious programs.

The RYS experience: Staff and participants had a very deep experience during their stay and built a strong sense of responsibility towards developing approaches that could benefit communites meet the basic human needs of health, food, and shelter.
