UPFI – “Honoring Mothers’ and Fathers’ Hard and Gratifying Journey”, a webinar commemorating UN Global Day of Parents on Thursday, June 2, 1-2:15 EDT

Through years of longitudinal research with at-risk families, Professor Philip Cowan and Prof. Carolyn Cowan, University of California, Berkeley, have shown that parent effectiveness and happiness increases when the couple’s relationship is strengthened – more than just attending parenting classes. This is a new and vitally important approach to helping parents in their challenging and critical task.

Sustainable development and social stability in every corner of the earth, are fostered by and uniquely dependent on competent, loving, mothers and fathers. Experts will discuss why the role and responsibilities of parents are irreplaceable but also challenging.  Parenting has never been easy but today there are unique challenges as well as positive opportunities such as the effort to improve fathers’ involvement. Studies show that one of the most effective ways to increase competence and, importantly, happiness of parents, is by supporting the couple to negotiate differences and improve their relationship. Speakers will share best practices from around the world that have increased couple cooperation and effectiveness as a parenting team. Parents deserve to be honored and recognized more than they are, moreover, they need support for their parenting journey to become more gratifying.

“We will promote the shared responsibility of both parents in education and in the raising of children, and will make every effort to ensure that fathers have opportunities to participate in their children’s lives.” Children’s Summit +10, 24

Carolyn Pape Cowan, PhD is Adjunct Psychology Professor, Emerita, UC Berkeley. “Why Parents’ Job is So Critical and So Hard”

Philip A. Cowan, PhD is Psychology Professor, Emeritus, UC Berkeley. “Best Practices: Strengthening the Couple to Parent Better Together“

The Cowans co-directed three longitudinal studies on how family relationships affect children’s adaptation. Their interventions showed that strengthening the couple's relationship directly increases children's flourishing.
