Africa Day

On the occasion of Africa Day, May 25, the Universal Peace Federation extends its congratulations and best wishes to the African Union and all its member states, and the 900 million people of Africa. As well as celebration, Africa Day is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing Africa and the world as we move into the second decade of this new millennium.  [Français]

Africa Day 2014 was celebrated in Australia with a week of festivities in Melbourne including a women's forum, street festival, sports festival, youth forum, talent competition, cultural events and business symposium, as well as programs in Sydney and Brisbane.

Johannesburg, South Africa - UPF-South Africa commemorated Africa Day, May 25, 2014, with the theme: “Commemorating Africa Day with Prayer and Devotion.” More than 16 different religious organizations were invited to share in the commemoration of this day.

Bienne and Geneva, Switzerland - A celebration of Africa Day in Bienne, on May 24, 2014, showcased talents of youth and promoted harmony between the generations and between people from Africa and the general population of Switzerland. Two days later, an international conference took place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on the theme "Towards Lasting Peace and Reconciliation in the Democratic Republic of Congo: The Role of Religion, Women and Civil Society."

New York, USA - The African Union in partnership with UPF and the United Nations African Ambassadors Spouses Group organized a celebration of Africa Day at the Manhattan Center in New York City on May 23, 2014.

New York, USA - Africa Day 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity, which gave way for the establishment of the African Union. On June 26, a New York 50th Anniversary Gala Celebration for Africa Day was held in Manhattan, co-sponsored by the African Group and the African Union in partnership with the Universal Peace Federation and the United Nations African Ambassadors Spouses Group.

London, UK - Africa Day was celebrated in a UPF-UK organized event on June 4 with a variety of perspectives in a packed House of Lords committee room kindly hosted by Baroness Howells of St. Davids. The event was also graced by a visiting delegation from UPF-Nigeria.

A festival in honor of the African Diaspora was held in Novosibirsk on May 25. Also on May 25, children in St. Petersburg made drawings and origami cranes with goodwill messages to send to children in Africa. A round table on June 19 assembled scholars and activists from Russia and Africa to discuss progress over the past 50 years.

Programs in commemoration of Africa Day 2013 were organized by UPF in commemoration of 50 years since the formation of the Organization of African Unity/African Union. The African Union celebrations, which are themed “2013, Year of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance,” began in Addis Ababa on May 25, to be followed by a year of celebrations across the globe.
