Service Programs

Education and Food Offered in Lesotho

Maseru, Lesotho - A major project of UPF-Lesotho is teaching HIV/AIDS prevention and caring for orphaned children because of the high HIV/AIDS infection rate in the nation (the UN estimates that 23 percent of people ages 15 to 49 are living with HIV). A recent program was teaching students at the City International High School.

The Women's Federation for World Peace has been running a school called Hlalefang (meaning 'to be educated') since 2005, after seeing from ages three to eight years old loitering around. The number of students has increased each year, with 87 enrolled in 2014. The shack that was built is too small for the 87 children, most of whom were orphaned because of HIV/AIDS. The weather is warm in the summer, but since Maseru is 1,600 feet above sea level, it is cold in the winter. Students are given food some days; if donations can be obtained, more food can be given. All this is being done by volunteers of the Women's Federation for World Peace in Lesotho, without any support from outside the country.
