UPF-Zambia Organizes Cleaning Campaign in Celebration of the Nation's Jubilee

Lusaka, Zambia - UPF-Zambia held a cleaning campaign at COMESA on Oct. 22, 2014, as a contribution towards the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the independence of Zambia. About 120 volunteers participated, including Ambassadors for Peace and people working in the market around COMESA.

COMESA is a busy quarter near the UPF Peace Embassy and is frequented by thousands of people daily.

Earlier, volunteers gathered at the Peace Embassy grounds for a program starting with a prayer offered by Mrs. Violet Kantakaluba, national coordinator of the Women's Federation for World Peace-Zambia, followed by short speeches delivered by UPF-Zambia chapter chairman Hon. Gen. Malimba Nathaniel Masheke, Mr. Pride Mwaanga and an administrative assistant at the Kanyama Constituency as a guest of honor representing the area's member of Parliament. The speakers encouraged volunteers to use this opportunity to improve the surrounding area. They also encouraged them to continue with the cleaning and not to stop at COMESA but to continue to Lusaka city and the country as whole.

The gathering was entertained by a boys brass band hired for the occasion to play at the Peace Embassy and lead the march and tour of COMESA areas. For the cleaning campaign, teams were formed and were sent to their designated areas for cleaning. The cleaning took about three hours.

The guest of honor, the UPF chairman and the UPF secretary general took part in the cleaning activities. The Waste Management Unit of the Lusaka City Council provided a truck for the removal of garbage, and some well wishers contributed to the cause.

At the end of the program, volunteers expressed their happiness about being part of this noble cause of cleaning. They urged UPF to continue with such initiatives.
