UPF-Solomon Islands Presents Gift to Japan

Honiara, Solomon Islands - A donation from UPF-Solomon Islands to assist victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami was delivered to a representative of the Japanese government at the office of the Parliament House on May 27.

In attendance were Sir Allen Kemakeza, Speaker of the House and Co-Chairman of the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund of UPF-Solomon Islands, representing all Ambassadors for Peace; H.E. Akira Iwanade, Charge d’Affaires of Japan; Chihiro Midoriakwa, President of UPF-Solomon Islands; and Rex Masuaku, Secretary General of UPF-Solomon Islands.

Earthquake donation handover ceremony, May 27, 2011
The ceremony began with words of condolence by Sir Allen Kemakeza to the people of Japan, acknowledging the consistent aid and support by the Japanese government to the Solomon Islands. This was followed by words of thanks by H.E. Akira Iwanade, acknowledging the efforts of UPF for the victims of the earthquake disaster and desire to make a donation to help speed the recovery. He mentioned that the donation will be presented to the victims through the Red Cross.

Japanese traditional paper crafts (orizuru) were also presented. They were made by the students of Maluu High School in North Malaita, expressing their desire for friendship and their prayers.

The total amount donated was SBD$40,350 (US$5,000).
