UN report card on anti-poverty goals
shows mixed picture of progress and obstacles

Ban Ki-moon - Secretary-General, United Nations
New York, United States, June 23, 2010

The world continues to make advances towards the Millennium Development Goals, despite the global economic downturn, but the rate of improvement remains too slow and countries must step up their efforts if the goals are to be achieved by their target date of 2015, a new United Nations report says.

The annual assessment report, released by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, shows that the world has made huge strides in reducing extreme poverty, tackling HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, and boosting access to clean drinking water, but is still lagging in other critical areas, such as improving maternal health and increasing access to decent sanitation.

NOTE: The Universal Peace Federation's projects and activities are directed to finding innovative ways to meet the MDGs and other difficult challenges facing the human family. It supplements the UN's perspective by stating that peace and prosperity for the human family cannot come through human effort alone. UPF advocates forming an interreligious council within the UN system to draw upon the insights of the world's religious traditions to address global issues.
