International Women’s Day Observed in Brazil

Brazil-2016-03-10-International Women’s Day Observed in Brazil

São Paulo, Brazil—To commemorate UN International Women’s Day, UPF-Brazil held an event at the Sorocaba City Council on March 10, 2016.

Dr. Neudir Simao Ferabolli, president of UPF-Brazil, spoke about the importance of women in society and their quest for rights.

He gave a historical retrospective of the latter, noting the March 8, 1857 strike in New York City in which hundreds of women working in garment and textile factories marched and picketed, calling for improved working conditions, and emphasized the significance of International Women's Day. He also highlighted women's achievements in recent decades. He noted the creation of women's police stations and the Maria da Penha Law (Lei Maria da Penha), a law that contains a comprehensive set of policies geared towards eliminating violence against women, in Brazil.

"But [is this] really solved? Every two hours a Brazilian is killed in a violent situation. [There also continue to be] many inequalities,” he said, and added that only seven presidents are women.

Afterwards, Dr. Ferabolli’s wife, Mrs. Ezzat Ferabolli, president of Women’s Federation for World Peace, Latin America, presented flowers to Councilwoman Mrs. Neusa Maldonado of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).
