Spanish

Lima, Peru - For the third consecutive year, UPF-Peru the UN International Women’s Day in the Congress of the Republic, in Lima, Peru on March 7, 2014. Congressman Dr. Yonhy Lescano Ancieta again cosponsored this meeting, which focused on the challenges and successes of women.

In his opening remarks Dr. Lescano spoke with great sincerity about the value of human life, especially commenting that the unborn child itself has rights (under the law) that are often not taken account by society when considering the sensitive matter of abortion.

The following four keynote speakers were all women, an Adventist chaplain, a lawyer, a Muslim woman and finally the president of the Women’s Federation in Peru. They all expressed their various views on the role of women in ways that captivated and inspired the audience that was more than 90 percent female.

These presentations were followed by a short artistic interval during which a professor of dance delighted everyone with the interpretation or two historically notable flamenco dances.

The appointment of new Ambassadors for Peace was exclusively aimed at women in this meeting and representatives from local government, teachers and university lecturers were among those nominated.

Women’s Day was also celebrated by other institutions during the week, and Dr. Trevor Jones noted in his closing remarks that three women Ambassadors for Peace had received awards from their respective local councils in recognition of their contributions to society, all of them in various ways putting into practice the motto of UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon of “living for the sake of others”: the chaplain in her hospital, a policewoman working with children through her own NGO, and a local government official teaching family values as part of her community work in the city of Trujillo.

The event closed with an award ceremony in which representatives of the audience received small gifts in recognition of the day.
