International Day of Peace Observed in India

New Delhi, India—UPF-India commemorated the UN International Day of Peace 2015 on September 21 with two events: one at the PGDAV (Pannalal Girdharlal Dayanand Anglo-Vedic) College of the University of Delhi and another in Orai, a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

At PGDAV College, representatives of UPF and Youth for Service, an initiative of the Youth Federation for World Peace-India, and scholars spoke at the Peace Day event. The program began with welcoming remarks, given by Mr. Anjan Bhatt, a coordinator of Youth for Service in India, who served as emcee for the event, followed by a singing of Indian songs about peace by Japanese youth volunteers. Ms. Gurusharan Kaur read the UN Secretary-General’s message for the Day. Ambassador for Peace Dr. Parmod Mehra, who is an assistant professor at IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), delivered the keynote address. Mr. Krishna Adhikari, secretary general of UPF-India delivered UPF’s statement. Mr. Shivam Singh Parihar, coordinator of Youth for Service at PGDAV College, gave closing remarks.

In Orai, Dr. Praveen Singh, coordinator of UPF-Uttar Pradesh welcomed guests and highlighted the importance of the International Day of Peace. Mr. Shri Niranjan Srivastav, education officer of the Central Board for Workers Education, an autonomous body under the Indian government’s Ministry of Labour & Employment, gave the keynote address and read the UN Secretary-General’s message and UPF’s statement.

The event was covered by local media.
