Day of Peace Observed in Georgetown

Georgetown, Guyana - There was standing room only as more than 100 persons attended the International Day of Peace Program hosted by the Guyana Chapter of UPF. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds attended the entire event, which lasted some two and one half hours. He gave the keynote speech based on the UN's theme for this year, "Make Your Voice Heard: Peace and Democracy." At the conclusion of the program, he took photographs with newly appointed Ambassadors for Peace and other guests and joined in several discussions.

The Hon. Prime Minister was welcomed by the national leader of UPF-Guyana, Ronald McGarrell. The National Anthem was sung by everyone, and prayers were offered by Pandit Chrishna Persaud (Co-chair of the Inter-Religious Organization of Guyana and Chairman of the Association of Justices of the Peace & Commissioners of Oaths), followed by Sister Vasantha (Head of the Brahma Kumaris Organization in Guyana), Brother Michael Jupiter (Chairman of the Ananda Marga Association of Guyana), and Ronald McGarrell.

An introduction to UPF was followed by a reading on the key role of families in establishing world peace and then a video about UPF. The Hon. Prime Minister was presented with a copy of the autobiography of UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon by the President of the Women's Federation for World Peace-Guyana, Mrs. Sheila Chapman-Wong. Dance sequences, peace quotes, and messages on the topic of peace were presented by religious leaders: Pandit Chrishna Persaud, Sister Vasantha, Brother Michael Jupiter, and Bhi Collymore.

Five new Ambassadors for Peace were inducted, and the Hon. Prime Minister presented the certificates. The charge to the newly-minted Ambassadors for Peace was given by the national leader of UPF. After the vote of thanks, everyone joined in singing "Let There Be Peace on Earth," after which refreshments were served.

Note: The Prime Minister is acting as President because the President is in New York participating in events at the United Nations.
