UN International Day of Families 2012

Day of Families Observed in Albania

UPF-Albania organized observances of the International Day of Families 2012 in Durres, Elbasan, Lezha, Tirana and Vlora.

Durres: In a meeting hall of the city's Culture Center, a Peace Council was established in Durres to help coordinate the work of the 14 Ambassadors for Peace who live there. Mr. Flamur Hidri was chosen as its president. The audience of nearly 100 people listened to speeches by Mr. Bajram Ibraj, Chair of UPF-Albania, as well as an international delegation including Rev. Yong Cheon Song, Chair of UPF-Europe; Mr. Mark Brann, Secretary General of UPF-Europe; and Mr. Jack Corley, Chair of UPF-UK.

Elbasan: The performing arts troupe "Angels of Peace" gave their first performance at the Skampa Theater. The "Angels of Peace" were formed based on the inspiration of the Little Angels, the Korean children's folk ballet founded by Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon. The program included dances and songs from all parts of Albania, which celebrated its 100th anniversary of independence in 2012. The mayor of Elbasan presented certificates to newly-appointed Ambassadors for Peace.

Lezha: Ambassadors for Peace were appointed at a meeting introducing UPF in Lezha at the public library, hosted by its director, Mr. Gjergi Shyti. Leaders were selected for a Lezha Peace Council.

Tirana: Seventy people attended a forum on the family. Speakers included Kozeta Zavalani, Tirana Peace Council chairwoman, who spoke on the value of family as a base for peaceful society and how relationships experienced in the family shape people's relationships with others. She was followed by Mrs. Drita Babameto, director of “Center for Development for Rural Women” and an Ambassador for Peace, who described the work of her organization in villages, including advocacy for discontinuation of child marriages still practiced in rural areas of Albania. Then Ms. Katerina Minollari, president of the Women's Federation for World Peace-Albania, spoke on role of women in the family and society, pointing to the need for developing skills of “everyday diplomacy” in dealing with challenging relationships. At the close of the program, 19 new Ambassadors for Peace were appointed.

Vlora: Mr. Bajram Ibraj, Chair of UPF-Albania, talked about living for the sake of others, and Mr. Gani Rroshi, president of the Family Federation for World Peace-Albania, gave a presentation on family values. Dr. Niko Veizaj, Vice Chair of the Albania Peace Council, talked about the insights he gained from UPF. Then 40 new Ambassadors for Peace were appointed, including a couple, Tozo and Aferdita Shakaj, who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
