Interfaith Harmony Week Celebrated in Slovakia

Nitra, Slovakia - On the occasion of the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week established by UN to be observed the first week of February each year, UPF-Slovakia and the Old Catholic Church of Slovakia held a joint prayer and worship service in the Old Catholic Church in Nitra on February 6.

Archbishop Augustin Bacinsky welcomed all participants representing historic and new religions with words about the necessity of interreligious dialogue and cooperation. UPF Secretary General Mr. Milos Klas then introduced the UN declaration of World Interfaith Harmony Week and the UPF proposal to create an interreligious council at the UN. He concluded with a reading of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's letter of support for the World Interfaith Harmony Week.

Archbishop Bacinsky and Rev. Miroslav Rybar then lit candles symbolizing the light of truth. Another religious text was read, and Rev. Vlastimil Sulgan spoke about interreligious harmony from the biblical viewpoint.

The meeting concluded with an opportunity for participants to learn to know each other and engage in discussion over the coffee and cake prepared by the Old Catholic Church members.
