If you don’t like the way the world is, you change it. You have an obligation to change it. You just do it one step at a time.

Peace Music Community Launched Print E-mail
By David Eaton, Music Director, New York City Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, December 06, 2008

Peace Music Community is a new online community of musicians dedicated to the ideal of using their creative abilities for peace. You can upload photos, video and audio, share with friends and colleagues via forums and blogging, chat, etc.

Since this is a public forum, we hope to keep the focus on the issues of music and culture as it pertains to peace building. Of course, philosophy and religion are significant issues in any discussion about peace and art so we welcome your thoughts along these lines. Noting the moral and ethical power of music, Plato said, "Let me write the songs of my nation and I care not who makes the laws." The Greeks placed a great deal of importance on the role of artists and musicians in creating a better society. Many artists are idealists at heart who want to use their talent for a "higher purpose." Making the world a better place is literally "the hope of all ages," so historically we're in good company.Noting the moral and ethical power of music, Plato said, "Let me write the songs of my nation and I care not who makes the laws."

The Peace Music Community is a project of the Peace Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization registered with the IRS as such. Dirk Anthonis and I have initiated this project with the help of Diego Costa and Russ Allen in the hopes of encouraging others to join the pursuit of peace through music.

We invite submissions for our first international "Peace Song Writing Contest." Click to read our announcement.
