Peruvian Ambassadors for Peace Join Coastal Cleanup Day

Peru-2018-09-15-Peruvian Ambassadors for Peace Join Coastal Cleanup Day

Lima, Peru—Inspired by the words of UPF co-Founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon during the Latin America Summit 2018 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in which she spoke about the need to protect the environment, a delegation of Ambassadors for Peace in UPF-Peru joined a beach cleanup on September 15 to mark the International Coastal Cleanup Day 2018.

International Coastal Cleanup Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of September and was started in 1986 by the NGO Ocean Conservancy. Volunteers from more than 100 countries come together each year and participate in a cleanup event near them.

The NGO Vida (Institute for the Protection of the Environment), whose vice president is Ambassador for Peace Dr. María Isabel Romaní Alcarraz; the Church of Latter-Day Saints, and the Ocean Conservancy were involved in the local cleanup.

The Ambassadors for Peace and other volunteers assembled on a beach known as Marbella, located near the capital, Lima, and worked all day to gather litter from the shoreline. At the same time, other groups worked in different coastal areas of Peru.

All the participants ended the day with a feeling of accomplishment and pledged to continue the cleanup in the coming years.
