RYS's Third Friendship America's Project Builds Classrooms with Locals in Honduras

Participants: 35 Nations Represented: 8

Tegucigalpa, Honduras—3rd Friendship America's Project

Background: The RYS was looking to expand its programs into Central America and found that Honduras provided an excellent opportunity. RYS worked with strong cooperation from the National Ministry for Social Projects which introduced us to the Mendoza school project in the outskirts of the capital. The Ministry provided nearly all the materials and also technical staff for the were project. This was a very good arrangement because it kept the funding cost down and the ministry was very pleased with the project and organized the forRYS in its 1998 project.

Duration: June 22 - July 2, 1996

Work: Participants helped roof and build walls for eight classrooms with local workers joining in.

Summary: The presence of RYS at the Mendoza school had a very positive impact on students, administration and staff. This RYS was the first bi-lingual project (Spanish-English) project. Co-operation for the project also came from the Honduras Air Force (donated a bus to use).

The strengths of the project included WFWP participants from several Central American nations, and the good participants from several Central American nations.

Co-operation: The Honduras Air Force, Ministry of Social Projects, the WFWP Central American chapters.

Media: National TV covered on TV evening news and a Sunday special family program. Also a good article was in a major newspaper.
