RYS-India Constructs New Wing at a Boarding School

Participants: 35 Nations Represented: 5

Madurai, India—

Background: The RYS has a deep concern for the situation of the poorest of the poor. The Gandhi Museum and a local organization based on thought and practice of Mohatma Gandhi wanted to extend a boarding school for the children of scavengers. The school was the best chance for these youth to break the cycle of poverty that they are so deeply caught in.

A strong foundation for the RYS exists in the Temple city of Madurai as a result of past cooperation between Mr. Hasagawa (IRFF), Mr. Pandian (Gandhi Museum) and Father Nittiya(OSF) as a result of the RYS Peace Week with the Gandhi Museum (Aug 93).

Duration: September 20 - October 3, 1994

Work: The participants worked on the construction of a new wing at a boarding school for Harijan children and help work on landscaping the area so it is safer for the children to play.

Summary: The project was a well run cooperative effort with the Gandhi Museum that involved participants from Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. The project helped as a training for the participants from SE Asia who later took major roles in national and regional projects
