Caring for the Environment in Czechoslovakia

Participants: 70 Nations Represented: 27

Brno Prague, Czechoslovakia

Background: The rapidly developing nation of Czechoslovakia was selected in the RYS efforts to make a foundation and model for the nations that had recently emerged from communism. This was the first major international project that the IRF did not sponsor international travel.

Duration: July 1 - 24, 1992

Work: The work project was designed to be in line with the educational theme: "Caring for the environment." All seventy participants and staff helped on various tasks at a large nursery/greenhouse where thousands of seedlings were cared for and large areas were weeded. These trees were to be placed in environmentally damaged areas in Czechoslovakia near the former border of East Germany.

Summary: This RYS project drew its participant base largely from Europe. on this project. One sign of the development of the RYS Alumni was that senior education staff could turned over much of the running of the education and training programs to the junior staff (RYS alumni).

A broader public program was organized which included one day of workshops and a candlelight peace vigil in the heart of Prague. The seminar program included three workshops and one hundred and twenty community members joined the seventy RYS participants for the sessions.

Among the participants were a group from Croatia who would within three years were able to begin to organize their own RYS projects in Croatia.
