RYS-India Restores Temple and Excavates Sacred Monuments

Vrindaban, India

Background: This was the third India based RYS project and the largest to date. The participants stayed throughout the project at the Goswami Ashram in Vrindaban which provided a very spiritual base to run our various programs. In past India projects work had been done on a mosque and a church and this time it was offered at a Hindu Temple. In the following year RYS woould have a tree planting at a Sikh Gudwaran. These efforts were to show that depite the recent religous riots a large body of Indian's sought to build an environment of religous cooperation.

Duration: February 16 - March 2, 1992

Work: The RYS participants worked to restore and paint old Hindu temple and spent much time excavating sacred monuments at a burial site that were covered by the passage over hundreds of years.

Summary: This project was important because it came at a time of rising religious tension. It helped to build a larger network in Northern India and also allowed those Indians from other regions to experience cooperating together depite their own cultural differences. The work site is of historic importance and the ciity of Vrindaban is very important to followers of Lord Krishna.
