RYS-India Restores Parts of a Famous School

Participants: 50 Nations Represented: 13

Madras, India—This effort was the largest in South Asia and pulled participants from throughout Asia. Youth leaders from the Gandhi Peace Movement in Madras who were RYS alumni helped in preparing the local foundation for a large project.

Work: From October 25 to November 7, substantial work was carried out in extending classrooms and restoring part of a famous old school.

Summary: The work site was chosen for its significance as a school where Ghandi had once spoken, and which continued to be maintained by adherents to the Gandhian philosophy. Many key religious leaders took part and made presentations. An RYS book was published from the results of the papers and presentations made by the wide-ranging array of speakers. The RYS project drew participants from most South and South East Asian countries.
