An Ambassadors for Peace Conference was held April 28-30 in Bujumbura, the current capital of Burundi. The 60 participants included government ministers and legislators. The vice president of the National Assembly gave opening remarks. Presenters included Rev. Mwalagho Kililo, UPF Regional Secretary General for Africa. National tensions underscored the need for state-level discussions about peacebuilding in the aftermath of conflict. Teachers, doctors, and soldiers asking for wage increases planned to hold demonstrations on April 30, causing some government officials to cancel their plans to attend the seminar. Additional meetings were held to discuss proposals for a peace embassy in Burundi and training educators to teach a peace curriculum. |
