Humanity has always sought to gather around great projects to decrease social tensions or transcend political, ethnic, or religious boundaries. This has been particularly true since second half of the twentieth century.
More than ever, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, faced with recurring problems of wars, pollution, globalization, and energy reserves, people wonder about the medium- and long-term future of our planet as a whole. From an economic, political, legal, and technological points of view, we will consider two great projects of world scope: the construction of a tunnel under the Bering Strait and the conquest of Mars.

The Bering Strait Peace King Tunnel, a bold project proposed by Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, has great symbolic and practical value, as it will allow completion of a global transportation system with bridges and tunnels connecting nearby land masses, which would bring together people of all races, cultures, religions, and nationalities in one peaceful and prosperous global community.

Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s philosophy centers on the renewal of peoples and their spiritual cultures. At one special conference, a major announcement was made regarding a massive project which he envisions as a way to unite the east and the west through a cultural and economic milestone: the building of the Bering Strait tunnel or bridge. To place this project into a better perspective and understand this unique vision, let us first look back to a few historical achievements:

Elementary logic would demonstrate that a bridge across the Bering Strait is not a commercial project, not some scheme, however great may be the risks involved, no business venture thought up by some entrepreneur, however far-fetched. Yet in fact, it promises definite commercial prospects. It is my conviction that this project is an all-important initiative on the part of modern mankind. Humanity today has immeasurable experience in elaborating and carrying out complex projects of a global scale – political, economic, cultural, and spiritual.

Based on my experience as a Diet Member and a minister of state, I have been very impressed, overwhelmed and moved by Rev. Moon’s strong passion and vision for peace. Above all, my heart beats faster with anticipation by hearing his plan of International Highway, which requires humankind to gather wisdom and act according to it, as well as his Japan-Korea Tunnel Project and Bering Strait Tunnel Project.

| | The UPF vision of a Bering Strait Tunnel could be taking a big step forward. A high-level delegation of Russian diplomats and engineers presented plans for the construction of a tunnel, pipeline and fiber-optic link to US and Canadian officials in April 2007. Tunnel projects have been proposed for more than 100 years, notably by UPF Founder Dr. Sun Myung Moon in 2005.

Russia plans to build the world's longest tunnel, a transport and pipeline link under the Bering Strait to Alaska, as part of a $65 billion project to supply the U.S. with oil, natural gas and electricity from Siberia.
The project, which Russia is coordinating with the U.S. and Canada, would take 10 to 15 years to complete, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow. State organizations and private companies in partnership would build and control the route, known as TKM-World Link, he said.
A 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) transport corridor from Siberia into the U.S. will feed into the tunnel, which at 64 miles will be more than twice as long as the underwater section of the Channel Tunnel between the U.K. and France, according to the plan. The tunnel would run in three sections to link the two islands in the Bering Strait between Russia and the U.S.

Comments We must encourage and applaud the courage of those few who see the need to unearth hidden issues of positive development for the next generation of our world. As I salute the vision and courage of Dr. Moon in joining forces to actualize this, I hope the world leaders will take a cue from it and use the opportunities ahead for the benefit of the larger society. I appreciate the opportunity to offer a few remarks at this important World Russian Forum. Russia and America, once dire enemies and both such important nations in the world, can now pursue a path of cooperation and partnership. We want to consider issues related to the part of the world where the US and Russia are in fact neighbors.
