Growing Interest in Senegal in UPF's Peace Perspectives

Dakar, Senegal - From December 26 to 30, Senegal had the opportunity to welcome Rev. Adama Doumbia, the sub regional leader of the Universal Peace Federation.

In Guediaway, a chief imam who had been appointed Ambassador for Peace in 2006, has been serving as Secretary General of an association of 55 imams. The situation in Guediaway, a city of 60,000 people near the capital, has been sensitive because imams went to the street protesting the rates and quality of services provided by the electric company. With the arrival of Rev. Doumbia, the imam organized a meeting of Ambassadors for Peace that was attended by the mayor, who was inspired by the vision of the Ambassadors for Peace program and was himself appointed Ambassador for Peace. The Muslim leaders were very interested in the national UPF programs and ways to expand them locally.

An Ambassador for Peace arranged a meeting with the President of the National Assembly, Hon. Mamadou Seck. Rev. Doumbia described the five principles of Ambassadors for Peace and the leadership conference held recently for Parliamentarians in Mali and Sierra Leone. In response, Mr. Seck described his interest in Asian and European perspectives about peace and his concerns about resolving conflicts and working for development in central Africa, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe.
