South Caucasus Peace Initiative

The situation in the South Caucasus, especially after the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008, threatens international security and causes suffering. UPF's South Caucasus Peace Initiative addresses ideological, interreligious and humanitarian challenges in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Scroll down for reports.

Goals: Build understanding among the diverse groups in the region, promote collaboration among governmental and non-governmental (including faith-based) organizations and the private sector
Methods: Consultations, people-to-people diplomacy through service, sports, and cultural exchanges

Yerevan, Armenia - A seminar attended by 40 participants, including Ambassadors for Peace and new guests, was held at Hotel Ararat in downtown Yerevan on Nov. 30.

Tbilisi, Georgia - On Nov. 17 and 25 Jacques Marion shared about some of UPF’s fundamental peace principles, followed by a discussion on new social trends in Europe.

Baku, Azerbaijan - Sixty Ambassadors for Peace and a few new guests attended a UPF conference in Baku on Nov. 23, 2013 at the Irshad Hotel, where Pope John Paul II stayed during his visit in Baku in 2002.

Baku, Azerbaijan - In an observance of the UN International Day for Tolerance, several women Ambassadors for Peace gathered in the UPF office in Baku on Nov. 20 for a seminar on “Women’s Role in Conflict Resolution.”

Tbilisi, Georgia - A visit at the end of October by Mr. Jacques Marion, Secretary General of UPF-Eurasia, offered opportunities for seminars and consultations with government officials about UPF's approach to peacebuilding.

Yerevan, Armenia - National UPF chapter leaders and NGO partners met in Yerevan on June 2 to follow up on the development of South Caucasus Peace Initiative. Konstantin Krylov, Secretary General of UPF-Russia, gave a briefing on the latest efforts to create bridges of peace between Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Yekaterinburg, Russia - UPF-Urals helped organize programs at the Ural Center with the Rustaveli Society of Georgia to introduce Russians to the distinctive culture of Georgia, a neighboring nation in the South Caucasus.

Tbilisi, Georgia - The Week of Family Values was held in Tbilisi, Georgia, November 4-13. Programs took place at High School No. 136 in Tbilisi, the Georgia Human Rights Ombudsman's office, and the Foundation for the Development of Human Resources.

Tbilisi, Georgia - The Secretary General of UPF-Eurasia, Jacques Marion, visited Georgia from August 12 to 17. During his stay, Ambassadors for Peace met at the Human Recourses Development Foundation of Tbilisi, on August 13. The 12 participants included NGO leaders, professors, participants in the summer volunteer project, and students.
