Florida, Argentina—An olive tree was planted on November 15 at the Municipal Delegation of Florida (Vicente López, Buenos Aires Province) as part of the campaign “Let’s Plant Trees: Let’s Sow Peace.”(*) This was initiative of Ambassador for Peace Federico Binnes Erbach, along with the Senior Parliament of Vicente López.

Before the planting ceremony, which was attended by a large number of neighbors and representatives of different entities, we had a cheerful gathering. Among the speakers were, among others, Susana Orue, director of Florida’s Municipal Delegation; Amelia Domec, president of the Senior Parliament of Vicente López; and Miguel Werner, secretary general of UPF-Argentina.

Ambassador for Peace Cristina Mirabelli remembered that the neighborhood’s name Florida comes from the armed conflict that occurred in Paraje de Florida in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which now belongs to Bolivia, on May 28, 1814, as part of the independence movement. The historian said, “Many brave people died for our cause organized by our first Creole government, which reached out in the vast territory that used to be the United Provinces.”

It is worth remembering that the well-known and popular Florida Street in Buenos Aires City refers to the same historic event, where patriots were able to reaffirm the independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata.

(*) The global campaign “Let’s Plant Trees: Let’s Sow Peace” is promoted by the literary-ecological program “Y volverán a ser árboles” and UPF-Argentina. It invites authorities, religious entities, directors of civil society organizations, schools, and the general community to join it. This program seeks to promote collective consciousness for environmental protection and to inspire further commitments for peaceful coexistence.
