Inaugural Seminar of African Traditional Religious Scholars for Peace (ATRSP)
December 14, 2017, Department of Religious Studies, University of Ibadan

In the pursuant of the goal of world peace by Universal Peace Federation (UPF), the role of religions has always been strongly emphasized. In Nigeria, one of the religions with high impact in the culture of the people is the African Traditional Religion (ATR), which is practiced in every community in Nigeria and in existence before the advent of Islam, Christianity and other religious groups.

Unfortunately, much attention has not been given to the wisdom inherent in the teachings and practice of traditional religions in Nigeria. As a follow up of the recent interreligious peace education seminar/workshop organized by the Universal Peace Federation – Nigeria, attended by representatives of different religious groups as well as traditional religious scholars, and the affirmation of the UPF fundamental principles for peace, it has become necessary to begin a movement of traditional religious scholars for peace. The inaugural seminar/meeting of traditional religious scholars for peace is being convened to deliberate on the need for the periodic convening of the Assembly of Traditional Religious Scholars for Peace to explore strategies of advancing African traditional religions in the quest for world peace.

On Thursday 14th, December 2017 at the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, the inaugural meeting of religious scholars committed to peace building will be held. The meeting will provide opportunities to participants to examine the UPF Principles for Peace and the Role of Traditional Religions in Peace Building as well as the need for the launch of an association of traditional religious scholars.

At the end of the meeting, a communiqué and a resolution will be issued and provided to all stakeholders. A special presentation on UPF Interreligious Peace Education shall be a special feature of the program. Interested traditional religious scholars are invited to attend the meeting. Some traditional rulers shall be invited to attend the seminar and encouraged to work with traditional religious scholars for peace in local communities.

The meeting is being facilitated by Ambassador Adekola Oluwawunsi of the Department of Religious Studies, University of Ibadan, on behalf of the Directorate of Interreligious Affairs, UPF Nigeria
